Two roadrunners in the field

yesterday afternoon

gray feathered, stiff twitching tails,

sharp heads jerking alertly

toward me as I pass them.

It’s a warm afternoon,

dormant alfalfa fields recite poems

filled with nostalgic, but soothing memories.

I pick up scores of beer cans

scattered in the irrigation ditch,

so many beer cans—

quarts, six pack boxes and paper bags

which I gather and mound up in a pile

for the county jail crew along the highway to pick up.

The beer cans are symbols of my brother

and parents killed by alcohol,

and I repeat a prayer for those other brothers and sisters

drinking last night.
